The Italian Top Chef Showcase event was held on 22nd June 2017 in the Sapphire Ballroom of the Hotel Fairmont Pacific Rim, in Vancouver.
The event was held with the support of the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver as part of the celebrations of the Italian Heritage Month. Many sponsors were involved. The evening was presented by Jim Gordon, from the Our City Tonight media partner.
There were about 320 guests and individual members of the Chamber, corporate members, media representatives (about 40).
The evening was divided into two main events. From 6 to 7 pm, during the Wine Reception event, guests were able to taste Italian wines and traditional Italian products such as the cured meats and cheeses listed below:

  • Taleggio PDO [cheese] 
  • Piave Vecchio PDO [cheese]
  • Montasio Stravecchio PDO [cheese] 
  • Pecorino Sardo PDO [cheese made with ewes’ milk] 
  • Gorgonzola Piccante PDO [cheese] 
  • Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO [fresh cheese made with buffalo milk] 
  • Pane di Altamura PDO [bread] 
  • Parmigiano Reggiano PDO [Parmesan cheese] 
  • Prosciutto di Parma PDO [Parma ham]
  •  Burrata PGI [fresh buffalo milk cheese] 

At 7 pm a cuisine show was held by two of Vancouver’s top chefs, Pino Posteraro and Angus An. They prepared their own dishes on stage, made from recipes containing PDO and PGI products. The dishes were prepared again in the kitchen by the chef Nathan Brown, who also added dishes of his own to the menu. The event allowed guests to see how three chefs from different culinary traditions (Italian, Thai, Canadian) approached Italian products. The three chefs were given event celebration plaques.
Great care was taken when publishing the programme, which included information on PDO and PGI status and their correct identification and recognition. Another element for the promotion of the products was the Silent Auction organised during the evening, in which many PDO and PGI products were auctioned.
The event proved very popular in the media and among guests. There was considerable awareness of it thanks to advertising on social media networks and in the local press being added to the long calendar of events in the Italian Heritage Month of Vancouver also helped.
